Course Description and Educational Objectives:

This four-part seminar will expose you to the essential elements of being in a managerial role. Seminar #1 introduces you to the foundational components of being a manager. It will detail your role as a manager and discuss the functions you should be performing daily. It will also provide you with tools to evaluate employee performance, provide feedback, select candidates for employment, and administer disciplinary measures, if necessary. This module will also look at the mistakes most first-time managers make. Finally, you will examine the challenges of managers in today’s business environment.

Seminar #2 will examine probably the most important function of a manager: communication. Managers spend 85% of their day in communication with employees and supervisors. Effective communication is critical to your success. This seminar discusses all things related to effective communication, including crafting your message, choosing the best medium, dealing with barriers and noise, common mistakes with communication, holding effective meetings, and making high-impact presentations.

Seminar #3 gets into the psychology of being a manager. It focuses on what we need to know about ourselves and our employees to perform at a high level. This seminar will apply theories from the field of psychology to the business environment to enable you to develop employees into high performers. Topics discussed in this seminar include traits and characteristics, motivation, goal setting, job design, conflict management, and team building.

The last seminar, Seminar #4, examines another critical role of a manager: that of a decision-maker. Managers must make both low-stake and high-stake decisions constantly, so it is critical that they understand their own decision-making style, as well as the tools and techniques at their disposal to ensure sound decision-making. In this seminar, we will examine rational versus non-rational decision-making, judgment shortcuts, biases, and decision-making styles. We will also explore some proven techniques to improve overall decision-making.
